Private Walking Tour of Genoa's Old Town

Walk through the heart of the city with a local host, discover hidden streets, hear fascinating stories and enjoy two small authentic tastings along the way. A perfect private walking tour of Genoa — at your own pace, with no shared group and no rush. Ideal for couples, friends, families, small private groups and cruise passengers who want a relaxed local introduction to Genoa's old town.

The route can stay as a relaxed 3-hour introduction to Genoa, or be expanded into a longer custom day with extra neighborhoods such as Boccadasse or Nervi, more food stops, viewpoints, aperitivo or a slower pace depending on your timing and interests.

Iconic landmarks & hidden gems

UNESCO-listed Via Garibaldi, the Rolli Palaces, the Caruggi medieval alleyways and the Christopher Columbus birthplace — seen with local eyes.

Two small tastings included

A piece of focaccia with fresh pesto, plus gelato or a local coffee with gelato depending on the season and timing.

Local stories, not boring history

Learn the city's stories in a relaxed and engaging way.

Itinerary

A typical route

Start
Meeting point

We meet in the city center. Exact location confirmed after booking — flexible to your accommodation.

~20 min
Via Balbi & Basilica della Nunziata

A grand avenue lined with historic palaces, leading to one of Genoa's most dazzling churches — a sober façade hiding an interior covered in gold and frescoes.

~15 min
Piazza Truogoli di Santa Brigida

A hidden little square with old communal washing basins — a glimpse of everyday Genoa that most visitors walk right past.

~30 min
Via Garibaldi & the Rolli Palaces

The UNESCO-listed "Street of Kings" — a row of aristocratic palaces, including Via Garibaldi 12, where Genoa's wealthiest families once hosted royalty.

~20 min
Belvedere Castelletto

Up via the charming Art Nouveau Liberty lift to a terrace with one of the best panoramas over the rooftops, domes and harbor.

~20 min
Piazza De Ferrari

Genoa's grand main square around its great bronze fountain — the lively heart of the city, framed by the opera house and elegant palaces.

~20 min
Chiesa del Gesù

A baroque jewel just off the main square, home to two original Rubens masterpieces that most visitors never realize are there.

~20 min
Porta Soprana & Casa di Colombo

The towering medieval city gate and, right beside it, the boyhood house of Christopher Columbus.

~30 min
San Lorenzo Cathedral

Genoa's striking striped-marble cathedral — one of the oldest in Italy, full of stories most tourists never hear, including an unexploded WWII shell still kept inside.

~30 min
Caruggi & local food stop

We wander the vicoli — the narrow medieval alleyways full of real local life — and stop for a piece of focaccia with fresh pesto, plus gelato or a local coffee with gelato depending on the season and timing.

End
Porto Antico

We finish by the sea at the revitalized old harbor — the perfect moment for your last questions and personal tips for the rest of your stay.

This is a typical route, not a fixed script. The exact path, stops and timing can shift depending on the weather, your mood and energy on the day — so not every detail is listed here. What never changes: together we see the essential heart of Genoa, the places everyone should experience at least once, plus the hidden gems and local tastings we discover along the way.

"Feeling at home in Genoa!"

Nefset was easy-going and shared her love for her adopted city. Her approach is not as the history and art teacher spouting details that can never be remembered, but as one who lives and breathes the local life. It made us feel very comfortable during our short stay.

FAQ

Good to know

Where do we meet?
Meeting point details shared after booking. I adapt to your location — hotel, cruise terminal or anywhere central. If you're arriving at the Genoa cruise port (Terminal Crociere), I'll meet you directly there.
How many people can join?
This is a private experience — just your group, no strangers. Couples, friends, families and small private groups work beautifully. The booking page supports groups up to 12 guests total.
Is food included?
Yes — two small tastings are included: a piece of focaccia with fresh pesto, plus gelato or a local coffee with gelato depending on the season and timing. This is not a full meal. If you want to try more along the way, I can suggest extra local stops; extra food and drinks are paid directly by guests on the day.
Can I customize the route?
Absolutely. If you want more food, more viewpoints, more hidden streets, a slower family pace, or extra neighborhoods such as Boccadasse or Nervi, mention it when booking and I'll adapt the walk.
Can we make it longer or more custom?
Yes. The standard experience is 3 hours, but it can be extended into a half-day or full-day private experience. We can add Boccadasse, Nervi, more food stops, viewpoints, aperitivo or a more relaxed route depending on your timing and interests. Tell me when booking or send a custom request.
What's the cancellation policy?
The €100 deposit is fully refundable if you cancel at least 7 days before the scheduled experience. If you cancel less than 7 days before, the deposit is non-refundable. Rescheduling is possible whenever availability allows.
How does booking and payment work?
To confirm your date, a €100 deposit is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance is paid online via a secure payment link sent by email, no later than 7 days before the experience. The deposit is fully refundable if you cancel at least 7 days before the scheduled experience. If you cancel less than 7 days before, the deposit is non-refundable. Rescheduling is possible whenever availability allows.
Is this a traditional historical tour?
Not exactly. These experiences are designed as relaxed local walks — the kind of day I'd naturally share with friends visiting Genoa. The focus is on atmosphere, hidden corners, food, views and authentic local culture rather than formal historical guiding. For guests curious about Genoa's history and cultural context, I also share a curated digital booklet with stories, facts and recommendations before the experience.
Is this good for cruise ship passengers stopping in Genoa?
Yes — this Genoa shore excursion is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the city during a cruise stop. The tour runs 3 hours, I can meet you at the cruise terminal or city center, and you'll be back comfortably before your ship departs. Just send your ship's schedule when you book and I'll plan around it.
Is this suitable for families with children or older travelers?
Absolutely. The route is an easy walk with no strenuous sections and plenty of stops. I adapt the pace and storytelling to who's in the group — whether that's kids who need short bursts of engagement or older travelers who prefer a slower, more relaxed pace. Many of our guests are families and retirees.
